A Fall Bucket List for You and Your Horse
With summer coming to an end and fall slowly making its way in, now is a perfect time to begin to think about the kinds of things you want to do with your horse this autumn. It’s a new season and the perfect opportunity to introduce new activities to your horse that will be fun for both of you to enjoy. Take advantage of the fall foliage and cooler temperatures to spend extra time with your horse outdoors. Fall is also a great opportunity to educate yourself on the kinds of things your horse will require for the colder weather in the winter. But we are getting ahead of ourselves; here is a list of things that you will want to do with your horse this fall:
Go for a trail ride - Get your horses out and active by taking them to a nearby trail for a ride! The colors are changing and fall foliage is all around so you will have beautiful scenery throughout your ride. The temperatures are much cooler than they were this summer so your horse will be grateful to get a break from the heat. Trail riding can have many benefits for your horse, including building up their stamina and building trust between you and your equine friend. Plus, you will be able to immerse yourself in nature before the cold of winter comes. So, grab some friends, or, just grab your horse and visit a local trail for some fall fun!
Try some new tricks or training: A new season could also mean it is time for some new tricks and training techniques. This does not have to be grueling for you or our horse but setting up a foundation for some new training in the fall can give you a great start to a year full of new things. Start small and continue to build up the training with your horse throughout the season; it will give you a great chance to get outside and enjoy time with them. Make sure you show your horse that they can trust you and that new training can be fun!
Make pumpkin flavored treats - One of the first things that come to mind when we think about the fall is pumpkins! Picking them, painting them, and eating them; pumpkins are at peak seasonality in the fall. We love to make pumpkin cookies, pumpkin pie, and other pumpkin treats for us, so why not share some of the pumpkin love with our horses. Give making horse treats a try and incorporate pumpkin into your recipes. Pumpkin is safe for horses to eat so give them a taste to see if they like it and if they do then make them a treat!
Dress up your horse - Human’s don't have to be the only ones to enjoy dressing up for Halloween! Dress up you and your horse together or just come up with a fun costume idea for your horse. See if there are any local parades or shows that you can take your horse to so that everybody can enjoy their costume. Just make sure not to put any costume pieces on your horse that will hurt them or put excessive weight on them.
Check on the health and overall well being of your horse - The intense heat of the summer may have been hard on your horse so now would be a good time to check on their health. Do they need a dental appointment or get their hooves cleaned? Consider bringing in a doctor just to check out your horse and make sure there are no long term health concerns heading into a new season. And if a problem does arise, take care of it in a timely fashion. Our horses are like our family so we should make sure they get treated like family.
