What is Equine Osteoarthritis?

There are many questions when it comes to the health of your horse and the conditions that may affect them throughout their lifetime. What is Equine Osteoarthritis?

Equine Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that can affect any joint where two cartilage bones meet. This is very common in both older horses and active horses that compete. This condition can be present in your horse's hocks, knees, stifles, and fetlocks.

 How does the joint become inflamed?

When cartilage in the joint breaks down from impact but is unable to repair itself efficiently is how arthritis occurs. Equine Osteoarthritis is almost inevitable from a horse's weight being pressed down from activity. 

Symptoms

The symptoms that are the most frequent in equine Osteoarthritis include heat from the affected area, swelling due to excess joint fluid, stiffness, pain and lameness, and crepitus (any popping, grinding, and crackling sound in an affected joint.) 

Treatments

Intra-articular (into the joint) therapy is administered only when your veterinarian has assessed the severity of the affected joint. Injections are risky due to possible infection.
